So with the recent news of A.M. (After Midnight skateboarding clothing company) dropping their first hardgoods and also releasing the Charles Lamb first ever pro graphic. Shit had me thinking. NYC right now has got some board companies going. Right now in the 2012, New York has got a full spread of board companies. And as far as independently run and designed and out of pockets go, these new entrepreneurs are making it happen not only by getting themselves known within the streets of Manhattan but in other parts of the world. Who says o.g peeps can’t make it happen. We have had some great amplified examples to look towards and learn from.

Zoo york first paved the way of how to showcase what real street skating was in New York City in the nineties. The way it achieved great heights was finding at the time the illest east coast heads with board control on the streets during its finest mixtape days and heavily mixing it with Ol’ Dirty Bastard rhymes. When I first came to New York City 12 years ago, I was, along with any other kid that came off that metal bird looking for what I saw within that VHS tape, and got to experience it to the fullest without running into any longboard idiots in the city. Shit, I wasn’t pulling tricks for the cams, but at the time I was a little grom, camera shy coming from a small town in Florida. From the time the Zoo video and the E.S.T. vid were released is why New York City skateboarding came to emerge as the grimiest, rat infested, cop not caring spot to come to skate. The first of the first always sticks. Eventually the real “KIDS” at Tompkins in the early two thousand era we’re talking about using Zoo shirts to wipe off their dirty dishes with. This due to some of them pissed off by how Zoo was sold and then it cleaned house with Ecko coming through and him “knowing” what’s really good. Especially when Brian Brown fell thru and some others, that to me, were pivotal in keeping Zoo underground and raw instead of setting off course towards mainstream Adam Sandler America. Then again I chill with Bill Murray so to each his own. I guess I understand you got to pay the bills and get skateboarding to actually dig you out of debt sometimes.

Lets not forget if it wasn’t for Greg Chapman a lot of good yesterdays wouldn’t have existed and a lot of whats happening today wouldn’t be happening within the confines of the east coast when it comes to producing our wood… so much respect due to those dudes over at Chapman warehouse. Then 5boro came out, making it happen also out of pocket and sticking to its guns all the way up until now. They have stuck to what real New York City street skating is since the day it started. Also now nationally known as having Lil’ Wayne as a devoted 5boro board rider it has to looked for ways to spread the good word through larger media voices. So if an opportunity presents itself and it includes a famous rapper that wants to learn how to do kick turns and he’ll throw a shout out, then hey “we’ll take it”. But 5boro is still raw in the NYC streets and within its team by keeping a tight knit group. Have you seen their recent video they dropped, it will make a whole new slew of other generations want to come move into the city. I wonder if Mayor Bloomberg knew how much we skateboarders help bring tourism up into that city so that he could one day do us a favor and drop the fucking rent for us.

Anyway… Then we got Hopps which has been going strong since 07. And I like the ice cream commercial, I like the cruising Joel Meinholz in the underground parking lot and especially the Steve Brandi clip. Sometimes if you play the wall like RZA said, long enough there’s going to be some fine dime pieces that notice ya. So hey, Hopps plays the wall, Hopps chills, it sits back and then throws things out there once in a while. They’re clean about it with a New york influence twisted throughout, in every way, even if it’s shot in Miami. So that’s sick to see it working out for Jahmal.

Then there’s also Rob Campbell’s company New Breed coming out of the city, particularly from the Queens area. And Rob’s at LES park in the morning shaking hands, sessioning the park, bringing tee shirts, extra boards, doing it the old hustling and meet and greet way. And it’s growing, now I see him posting things on the internet all the time. And what’s not to like about Rob Campbell and his cameo in that Poisonous vid brings him some much needed 2012 light. Plus, shit, if you didn’t like him you wouldn’t say it to his face. I mean face it, he has the power to kick your ass and the 10 dudes around you. You’ll more than likely say shit under your breath not thinking or not knowing who this, more than welcoming O.G. cat is, but I can tell you Rob Campbell is going to be doing a frontside 360 you wish you had, and selling his board to every kid who needs a new deck for under cost and cheaper than you’d normally get at your local skate shop. And thats not to say his boards are in shops also and getting so much recognition that when I was in Japan some cats asked if I have heard of New Breed. Huh? Crazy, the power a city like New York has. And that goes to show Rob is making it happen.

Then we have Pow!! Skateboards made by Nolan Lee. Most everyone in the city knows Nolan. That’s because Nolan likes to be heard. If he could, he’d have a banner flying over the city that would say, “I am Nolan Lee and I make Pow Skateboards!” and include a giant mug of him smiling with a blunt hanging out his mouth. Because that’s Nolan, he likes to be heard, he likes his skating to be known. And that’s what you get from Pow skateboards. You get kids down to run around and get footy together and try to make a sound in the city, and they’re doing it. I’ve known Nolan for a long time, he has skated his ass off. He’s jumped down some shit and just never got the love from other companies he thought he rightfully deserved so it’s no surprise that in the 2011 he decided to drop his own pro model on his own board company. Others from the outside, have a lot to say about that shit. Like who the fuck does that, to thats not ETHICAL, NOT WORTHY, ETC, ETC. If your not on a company and you keep producing your ass off, but no one gives the kinda love you think you deserve than what does that drive a man with a personality like Nolan to do. Make your own shit. A lot of other people wouldn’t have the balls, or just think it’s egotistical. Anytime you got people thinking about you, something must be working. So good for Nolan for taking a chance, for being ballsy enough, and bringing names to some young kids you wouldn’t have known that even lived in the city or even skated. And it must be working because he’s got randoms knowing about his work.

So Who else we got?… oh then we have, Iron Claw Skates. Which I believe Iron Claw is a partnership between Lurker Lou and his long time friend Tyler Mate’s. Lurker Lou is a prime example of someone who should have been hooked up a long time ago with a legit company and eventually should have had his own board in my opinion. I remember watching this and he had those manuals underneath the bridge, you know where those kinked pads are in Miami, he shut that shit down and definitely had florida heads rewinding that shit. To think that it took him being an “asshole” on Slap’s “One in a Million” show for him to get any kind of recognition, just goes to show you how ass backwards the skateboard community can be. He doesn’t have his own pro model board on his partnered company yet, but after his rise in popularity due OIAM. I’m sure he’s thinking of something to come out with his name on it. Maybe a board broke in half by Lou with his mug on it that comes in the mail so that internet rich kids can write all over his face would be a great pro model release. I feel like something running along the same vein as Vincent Gallo’s ideas online would work for him. I’m sorry, I forgot to mention that his Claw company added on a OIAM contestant to their roster and Lou has a great eye for finding New york city prospects. He’s down to support them just as much as they can produce footy. So big up to Lou for being a nice guy after all.

There’s a little company also that has been brewing around NYC since 2010, and that’s Music Skateboards which I don’t no to much about. I know that their graphics are based on Jazz music and Jazz musicians which when thrown up on a deck looks real clean and simple. But as for a team, not sure if they have one. And last but hopefully not least is Naysayer Skateboards. A small company also who has dropped some pretty sick graphics this past year. I almost forgot about them but how could I, they got my friend Piro on there and well, I was surprised that the recently dropped part from Piro Sierra on SLAP didn’t include a Naysayer stamp on it. It’s no question Piro is on fire and he’s a Florida boy originally from NYC, he is definitely a big add to any company. I didn’t see his name on the site this week so, I’m sure something must be up. Anyhow, he’s a humble dude, and his recent footy is only a little dose of what he’s really got on tape… so stay tuned for more from that cat, and as far as the rest of this company goes, these are some of the easy going dudes living in NYC who are doing there thing. I think its a great thing when all these companies regardless of background are still doing it the old fashion way. You produce some footy, I like your attitude, the way you skate, and the fact that you stay in touch with me, then hey you got a board from me whenever need be. It’s sick to see how it all comes full circle.

Especially when it all started with Shut Skateboards, the very first company in NYC to emerge, back when there was no internet, and most of these kids were still a gleam in there fathers eye. They have held NYC down since 1986. I recently saw this on their site… a little NYC history for you, and I also want to tell people to learn about quartersnacks.com. They’re the ones who even inspired me to write a damn thing about NYC skateboarding. They’ve held the only internet spot list of NYC down for a minute. So big-ups to them. Anyway, go skate now and get hyped, summer is coming again, time to lose ya winter weight haha… peace and now you know your NYC labels kids…

And while I was there I ran into Jake Johnson, someone I see around from time to time. He ends up telling me about this tour he’s put together himself. I didn’t catch the whole story until a couple days later. When Jimmy Lannon sends me a text about his whereabouts and what’s happening. Murilo Romao chillin at Astoria banks in Queens — Ricardo Napoli

Gainesville, FL is well known for the spots at the University of Florida, but not a lot of people know that the Community College on the North end of town has a lot of great stuff too. And the main things it has going is that it’s all covered and it takes a while for security to make it’s way around to find you, all of which makes it a great rainy weekend spot. This day was one of those, we must have had 6 cars full of homies in town and once it started raining we all headed there.

There was a great 4 or 5 person session going down on this rail, and I was filming a line with someone else at the time but I took 5 minutes to snap a few photos. Not sure that this photo does the trick justice, the rail is really super close to the wall and not exactly low. By the time security finally caught up with us, the rail looked like someone had been beating on it with a sledge hammer and was being held into the wall by two screws.

Unlike the rail, Nick was the only one skating this wall. He landed his wallride in about 3 tries and then went on to do at least 8 more, giving everybody around plenty of time to film, get photos, and instagram it.

Rafael Gomes smith grind SKATE Brazil cover

Rafael Gomes with 5BORO just released a pro deck in Brazil that was presented at the Agenda Trade Show 2012 in Long Beach, California. Rafael was the best skater in 2010, elected by the Cemporcento Skate Magazine in Brazil.

Renato Custodio shot the magazine cover with the smith grind in NJ and Rodrigo Petersen shot the board preview at the Agenda show. From his past visit up to NYC he got down on a couple photos with the homie Ricardo Napoli also.

This lipslide with ease is in Astoria, Queens shown below and a backside noseblunt from flat under the BQE last, a usual spot for the New York winter months.

Dante Debose ollies a street gap in Orlando, Florida — photo Scott Kramer

This street gap in Orlando is kind of crazy. Right in the middle of downtown, on the main strip, uphill runway. And the gap is the entrance to a parking garage so the security guard tends to run you down pretty quick. Not to bust on Dante, but somehow OG Orlando skate ninja Freddy Tan managed to backside flip it. Check out the spot next time you’re in downtown O-town. -Scott Kramer
